When it comes to Greenland – the world’s largest island with 81% of its surface covered in ice, we probably have only one keyword to describe this place: “Cold”. Photographer Michael Quinn traveled on his journey and found some incredibly majestic moments, like scenes from another planet through the interesting photo series below…
Greenland (Greenlandian: Kalaallit Nunaat, meaning “people’s land”; Danish: Grønland, meaning “Green Land”) is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Norse folklore tells of Erik the Red, who was banished from Iceland for murder. He, along with his extended family and slaves, set sail in search of a land rumored to be to the northwest. Once there, he named the land Grønland (“Greenland”), perhaps to attract more settlers.
Greenland belongs to the Arctic climate zone. The average temperature of the hottest month of the year does not exceed 10 °C.
The majority of Greenland’s population is Inuit (Eskimo).
There is virtually no road system here, so the only means of transport are planes, especially helicopters, and boats. In some areas, dog sleds and snow scooters.
