Visit the beautiful Church of the Good Shepherd and enjoy exceptional views of Lake Tekapo and the surrounding mountains. Explore the simple yet charming nave of the small church and chat to the vicar about the history of the area. Be sure to wander around the church grounds and enjoy the views across the majestic mountains.
The Church of the Good Shepherd was built in 1935 after local people donated land and money to build it. Before that, they had to hold services in their homes. The church is built entirely from stone from the shores of Lake Tekapo and is designed to offer one of the most spectacular views in the area through the altar window. The church is a communal worship building, hosting services for three denominations.
Most visitors will head straight for the clear glass altar window to take in the picture-perfect view of the lake and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. From the windows, visitors can also see the pine-green Motuariki Island. Spend some time in the quiet main hall of the church to admire some of the small carvings and the simple altar. Note that photography is not allowed inside the church.
Step outside and stroll around the picturesque grounds of the church. Locals claim that this is the most photographed church in New Zealand. With the sparkling waters reflecting the mountain peaks in the lake, visitors will find it hard to resist taking a photo of themselves.
