On April 25, photographers capturing the violent eruption of the Calbuco volcano in Chile caught a very mysterious image: a giant “god” appearing in the ash right at the volcano’s crater.
The photo captured a giant column of ash and smoke shaped like a human, leading local elders in Chile to believe that this was a sign that the mountain god was angry and caused the volcano to erupt after 40 years of dormancy.
The incident on Wednesday created a huge ash cloud that could be seen 12 miles away.
The photo was taken by Hariet Grunewald, 33, who lives near the town of Puerto Montt.
“I heard the explosion, I ran to the window and just started taking pictures,” Hariet said.
